The Problem

Reading, writing, and spelling are often difficult and confusing. This is caused by the fact that quite a number of words have a meaning that cannot be readily pictured. The list includes common words like if, and, or, the, with.

Confusion

Similarly, numerals and arithmetic symbols may be confusing. For instance, knowing what “three” looks like (3) does not necessarily mean a person knows that it is a symbol that represents a quantity (o o o.)

The confusion can become so overwhelming that a person can no longer properly:

  • read
  • write
  • spell
  • solve a math problem
  • listen to and understand directions
  • carry on a meaningful conversation.
